Commands

MRA has a wealth of commands. All of them are listed here, broken down by category:

  • User commands (communicate with other players or NPCs, or commands specific to the user)
  • General commands (gameplay commands)
  • Combat commands (commands usable only in combat)

Many commands (including some spells, etc) require a direction to be entered with the command. The way this is done, is exactly like moving your character, except instead of your character being moved, small arrows are placed on the display, and letters (N, S, E, W, etc) are placed on the command line.

If there is no command on the command line and you enter directions, the game assumes you are moving, otherwise it puts in directions as indicated above. To remove directions, use the dash button or the Esc key to erase the command line.

Most commands can be abbreviated (MEM for MEMORIZE, e.g.) to save time. Be careful when abbreviating commands, however, since some start with the same letter(s) (DRINK and DRAW, e.g.).

User Commands

BUY: To buy something from a merchant, you must first stand next to the seller's counter and ask him what he sells, like so: "<NPC name>, sell". The seller will give you a list of things he sells; if you have enough coins to buy an item you want, either in your hand or in your pouch, and move the coins to the counter (see HELP ITEMS, etc.). Then ask the seller to sell the item via <seller>, SELL <item>. The seller will then take the coins and put the item on the counter.

Potions, scrolls, and other items with levels have a different format: "<NPC name>, sell L# <quantity>", where L# is the level and number (you must have both L and the number) and quantity is any number above 1.

CRT <parameters>: The CRT command allows you to control variables for your character that are kept on the Host Server. See here for a list of parameters and their uses.

DO <text>: Use this command to execute an action that everyone within your 3D display will 'see' (e.g. 'DO jumps' will display the message '<your name> jumps'). This does not otherwise have any effect on the game.

FOLLOW <character name>: Use this command to follow another player. Once entered, you will then follow immediately behind and move through the same movement path and at the same rate as they move. To stop following, enter FOLLOW with no parameter. If you lose sight of the player you are following, move yourself, or get involved in combat you are no longer considered to be following. NPCs and monsters may not be followed. (This command no longer works, but is listed here for reference purposes.)

EMSG <character name>: This command allows you to send an EMsg to another player. You must be at your desk to send the EMsg, and you can only EMsg characters who are up to two levels higher than you. The exceptions to this are when replying to an EMsg sent to you, or when using the reception area desks of Lords and Ladies of towns, where you may send an EMsg to that Lord or Lady. After entering the command and character name, enter the text that you wish to send on the next line and hit ENTER to send it. The EMsg will be saved for that player until they read it at their desk.

EXIT: Enter this command to exit from the game and return to the OGN Main Menu. If you are engaged in combat, the critters will be allowed one last attack. If you die or are dead already when exiting, RECALL will be executed for you. If you are bleeding or otherwise damaged severely, your character will not be allowed out of the game until the situation is rectified.

Note that clicking on the 'gem' in lower left hand corner of the screen has the same effect as entering EXIT. Also, you can hit CTRL-F12 to drop the connection to OGN and return to your operating system.

GROUP <group name>: Use this command to start a group or join one already started. In the former case the name of the group must be at least 3 and no greater than 10 characters long. In the second case you must know the name of the group. Grouping has several benefits: those with limited death messages (see CRT M can see if any group members die, and those who elect to disallow unsolicited spells and prayers can still receive them from fellow group members. Group members also gain experience for any kill that an individual member makes provided that they are within sight of the player making the kill; the experience is increased and then divided up based on each character's level.

Entering GROUP with no parameters enables you to leave the group. If the player who created the group leaves, the next player to join is then the leader.

MACRO: Enter this command to create a macro. The game will tell you to hit the key you want to use for the macro, then enter the text. valid macro keys are a Ctrl-key or Alt-key combination. For Ctrl, any alphabetic keys except for H and M, as well as the 6, -, ], and \ keys, can be used. For Alt, any of the keys in the center of the keyboard can be used. Hold the Ctrl or Alt key down and then hit the desired second key, then enter the text to be used; the text can include NPC names, commands, or simply a string of text. Hitting the ENTER key will finalize the macro creation. After you have created the macro, whenever you hit the Ctrl-key or Alt-key sequence, the text you will be placed on the command line.

REPLY: This command allows you to send a reply to an EMsg or TELL sent to you by another player. For EMsg, you must enter the REPLY command immediately after reading a message. It otherwise works exactly like EMsg, except that any character, regardless of level, may be sent a reply. If you enter this command at any other time, the TELL command along with the name of the last character you sent a TELL message to will be placed on the command line, and you can then enter the text that you wish to send to that player. For convenience, if you hit the comma key while there is nothing on the command line it will have the same affect as REPLY.

SAVE: Use this command to save any changes you have made to Text and Expanded Text modes via the SET command (see below).

SCRY <level>: Entering this command will give you a list of the players currently in the land. To use it you must be at your room desk or in a pub. The list includes player name, area where each is adventuring, and a with a letter indicating a channel (M for MAIN, N for NEW, P for PRIME, H for HUNT, C for CHAT, and * for a private channel). If there are more players than can be covered in one screen, then you must enter SCRY multiple times to scry them all.

Also, if you are in a guild you can SCRY GUILD; if you have friends set up you can enter SCRY FRIENDS.

SET <CHAT, EXT, MSG, SOUND, TEXT> <value>: The SET command changes settings that are stored locally on the player's computer, which means you must use the SAVE command to save them. They will not be applied if you access your account from another computer.

Save command parameters are as follows:

CHAT: This command controls the settings for the Expanded display. Entering a value (10, 12, 14, or 16) after the command, it changes the size of the font. Entering a color (blue, cyan, gray, green, pale, or yellow), it changes the background color.

EXT: This command sets how far the text box expands when you're in battle. Enter SET EXT followed by 0 - 3 for the popup size. Entering SET EXT with no parameters will reset it to 0.

SET SOUND: This command toggles the sounds on and off.

MSG: This command will hide or display non-hit defensive messages (battle spam), as well as NPC and player yelling.

TEXT: This command controls the settings for the Text display. Entering a value (10, 12, 14, or 16) after the command, it changes the size of the font. Entering a color (blue, cyan, gray, green, pale, or yellow), it changes the background color.

Speak: To speak openly, enter a single quote (') followed by the text you wish to speak, and everyone you see within 4 squares will hear you. When speaking thus, what you speak is reflected back to you in blue, while others that are within 4 squares will see it in black. Note that in some areas, like the town hall and some pubs, the acoustics of the area are such that everyone in the area will hear what someone says regardless of whether they can see that player or not.

STATS: Use this command to display your personal stats.

TELL <character name> <text>: This command allows you to send a message to another player currently in the game, even if they are not within your view. The player's name must be typed in exactly as it appears - names are case-sensitive. The text you send will be reflected back to you in bright blue while the receiving player will see it in white.

If you enter no text, you will just be told if the player is online. Using a character name of OFF will toggle whether others can TELL to you or not. You cannot TELL to players two or more levels higher than you unless the other player TELLs to you first, in which case you may reply using TELL or REPLY.

TUNE <channel>: The TUNE command allows you to tune into and have telepathic conversation with a number of other players at the same time, even if they are not within your view. You may enter TUNE with no parameters, tuning you to your default channel, or a specific channel name (see below). Any text you enter while on channel following a double quote sign (") will be seen by everyone on that channel; it appears to you as bright blue text, while everyone else sees it in yellow. TUNE with just one letter will list the characters on that channel. To leave a channel, enter TUNE with no parameters.

The list of non-private channels is: Brawl (must be on a Game Plan), Main, and New; guilds usually have a specific channel; entering any other name creates a private channel.

WHISPER: To speak privately to another player character (i.e., whisper) or to speak privately to a non-player character (note that this is the ONLY way you can to talk to NPCs) click on that character's rectangle and then type in the text you wish to whisper. What you whisper will be reflected back to you in blue-gray, preceded by the name of the target, while the recipient will see it in brown preceded by your character's name. Note that most NPCs will respond to the word 'Hello' and may respond to other words that they may or may not mention.

YELL: To yell to other player characters over a distance, enter an exclamation point (!) followed by the text of what you wish to yell. Everyone you see, regardless of distance, as well as everyone within 4 squares, regardless of whether you can see them or not, will hear you. As with speaking normally, what you yell will be reflected back to you in blue while others see it in black. However, with "yell" your text will be forced to uppercase indicating that you are yelling.

General Commands

BANDAGE: Use this command to stop bleeding. The amount of bleeding that can be stopped depends on your First Aid skill compared to your character level. If it is two or more levels less, just -1 bleeding can be stopped. If it is one level less, then -2 bleeding can be stopped. If it is equal, -3 can be stopped; if it is greater by one, then -4 can be stopped, and if it is greater by two or more then -5 can be stopped.

CLIMB <direction>: Use this command to climb over an obstacle that is in your way.

CLOSE <direction>: Use this command to close a door.

DRAW: Use this command to draw the weapon you last belted. This is simply a faster way of getting your weapon back in your hand than using the Inventory displays. If you do not have the Inventory screens up and you click on the D button, the Draw command will be put on the command line; you only need to right click and it will be executed.

DRINK <number>: Use this command to drink the contents of a container you are carrying. The game checks your right hand first, then your left and all locations on the belt. If you add a number after the DRINK command, then it chooses the container in that position. In all cases the container is completely emptied and disposed of. If there is or is not an effect you will get a message indicating so.

DUMP <container> (number) <direction>: Use this command to dump the contents of a container, which may be either a pouch or a sack (if you have multiple pouches and/or sacks, the default will dump the first one; enter a number to choose one lower on the belt). If you do not indicate a direction, the contents of the container will be dumped in the square you are in.

If you have the inventory screen up, you click on the D button and then click on the container (sack or pouch) and then, on the 3D display, click in the direction that you wish to dump. This has the same results as entering the command manually.

FORGET <teleportal name>: Use this command to forget a teleportal you have previously memorized. If you are standing on a teleportal, you can use the FORGET command without any parameters to forget that specific TP.

Since newly memorized teleportals are placed at the top of your list, you can use this command along with memorize to manage your list of teleportals - just use FORGET and then MEMORIZE on a given teleportal to move it to the top of your list.

GIVE <target>: Use this command to give something to an NPC. The target is the NPC that you wish to give the item to; the item to be given must be in your right hand.

LOOK: Use this command to change the direction you are facing without actually moving. Use the mouse, the keypad, or enter one of N, S, E or W to indicate the direction you wish to face. If you enter this command with no direction, you will be told what terrain you are on, and any messages for the area are redisplayed.

When the Inventory screens are up, if you click on the L button and then click on any item in the items displays, you will get a message telling you what you see (e.g., LOOKing at a weapon or piece of armor tells you its material and craftsmanship level, as well as if it's enchanted or not).

If you enter LOOK with a character or NPC as a parameter, or with no parameter at your locker (looking in a mirror), you will be told what you would see if looking at that character (level and any gear).

LOOT: Use this command to loot the items in a square. You will take all coins and gems and put them in your pouch. To take other items you must use the Inventory displays.

If you do not have the Inventory screens up and you click on the L button, the Loot command will be put on the command line for you; you only need to right click and it will be executed.

MEMORIZE: Use this command (or MEM, for short) to memorize a teleportal. You must be on the teleportal in question to memorize it; you will be told the name of the teleportal you have memorized, which is added to your (T)eleportals pulldown menu list.

OPEN <direction>: Use this command to open a door.

PEEK <direction>: Use this command to look into another square without actually moving into that square. Use the mouse, the keypad, or enter N, S, E or W to indicate the direction of the square that you wish to peek into.

READ: Use this command to read a book that you find in the game. You must be in the square with the book for this to work. Also, use this command to read emsgs sent to you by other players. To do this you must be at your desk. Note that EMsgs are saved for you until you read them, but are then erased.

RECALL: When you die. you lose 1% of your experience and training points. If there isn't anyone around that can or will raise you from the dead, then you must use RECALL. You lose another 1% of your experience and training points, but will be raised from the dead and placed in the church in Haven, minus all gear except for personalized items.

If you leave the game while dead, the RECALL command will be executed for you. RECALL will not work for characters that are not dead.

SEARCH: Use this command to search the square that you are in, including any and all corpses in that square. You will be told if you find any exceptional items, but only the best of multiple items of a given type (e.g. weapons, shields, etc) will be listed. Searching causes Stamina, Mana, and Karma fatigue.

If you do NOT have the Inventory screens up and you click on the S button, the Search command will be put on the command line for you; you need only right-click and it will be executed.

SENSE: Use this command to sense an item that might be magical, supernatural or enchanted. If you use the S button while the inventory screens are up, you can click on any item in the items displays and thus sense it. This command works only if you have a Sense ring; Sense rings work only on items up to two levels higher than the ring's level.

SLEEP: Use this command to sleep and recover all stress and fatigue. It will only work in your bed, or on the one in the Haven Common Room. If you are currently bleeding or poisoned, you will not be able to sleep.

TAKE <item>: This command can be used to take certain types of items that are on the ground and put them in your sack. Typically this means creating macros as a faster way to take these items than using the items displays. The item taken may not be tied to another player, but otherwise the valid parameters are AMULET, ARROW, BELT, BOLT, CLOAK, POTION, RING, ROBE, SASH, SCROLL, STONE, SYMBOL, and WAND.

Also, if a number is entered instead of an item, the first item at that level of the number will be taken (if there are multiple items of that level, you'll have to enter the command multiple times; if there are no items of that level, you will be informed of it).

TP: The Teleport command (TP) will move you from one teleport to another. However, to TP to any teleport, you must memorize that teleport at its location. Once a TP has been added to your (T)eleportals pulldown menu list, it is easy to use, as all you have to do is pull the menu down to the TP you want and then release the button. The TP command, along with the name of the TP, will be put on the command line; you only have to right click. You can also type "TP <name of teleportal>" in the command line and hit Enter.

This command can only be used while you are standing on a blue or green teleportal. Each room in the Inn has a green teleportal that can only be memorized by that room's owner. Blue teleports can be memorized by anyone.

You can also use TP RETURN, which can be used anywhere; this will return you to the last teleport you used, but will cost you half of your remaining Stamina, Karma, Mana (this is typically used as a last resort, or if you get stuck somewhere). TP RETURN cannot be used while you are in sight of hostile critters.

See also the MEMORIZE and FORGET commands.

UNLOCK <direction>: Use this command to unlock a locked door. The Haven Inn room doors are tied to room's owner and will unlock for that player only. Other doors require the correct key in the right hand for the door to unlock.

WIELD: Use this command to change the way you are holding a dagger or stiletto, from holding it with blade pointed forward to holding it with blade pointing downward, or vice versa. The way you hold a dagger or stiletto makes a difference in what combat commands are available (see below).

COMBAT COMMANDS

See also Combat for details on combat.

AGGRESSIVE <attack> <target>: If you enter this command before your normal melee command, you are considered to be attacking very aggressively with little regard to life and limb; your enemy will get to attack first, and will do so with a +6 bonus, but then you can attack at +6 also.

This option is good to use when your defensive bar is high, as you can then handle the +6 to your attacker's rolls while getting the +6 yourself. However, it should be noted that you fatigue more when using this option and that tends to become a limiting factor.

BASH: This command represents a straight bashing type attack on the opponent. It is the easiest attack to make, but does the least amount of damage. This attack type does not cause bleeding, but has the greatest chance at dazing, stunning, knocking unconscious or knocking down an opponent.

CHOKE: This attack type is not currently available.

CHOP: This Monk command has less chance of hitting than PUNCH, but typically does more damage.

COUNTER: If you enter this command instead of a normal melee command, your enemy will get to attack first, but then you can attack with a new set of melee combat variables; you use the one that gets the best natural die roll (the game calculates this for you) for your attack.

COVER: If you enter this command instead of a normal melee command, you will not be able to attack in this round nor in the next one, but gain a +9 bonus defending against all attackers in this round. This is a good command to use if you are overwhelmed or if your defense is very low.

To select the COVER command on the melee combat screen, click a second time on PARRY.

CRUSH: This attack type is not currently available.

DEFEND: If you enter this command instead of a normal melee command, you will not be able to attack in that round; you gain no bonus to defense, but you fatigue only half as much as normal. This command is usually used to regain some fatigue when it has gotten low.

GRAB: This attack type is not currently available.

HACK: This command represent a straight cutting attack with a bladed weapon. In general, it is easier to hit with than THRUST or SLASH, but does less damage. The damage caused is slashing, which may cause bleeding or cause the target to become dazed, stunned, knocked unconscious or knocked down.

KICK: This attack type is not currently available.

LOAD: Use this command to load a sling, bow or crossbow. For a sling you must have a pouch with sling stones in it on your belt. For a bow, you must have a quiver with arrows in it on your shoulder. For a crossbow, you must have a crossbow bolt in your hand (it thus takes two turns to load a crossbow). There is no need to load a shortbow as it is loaded automatically for you whenever you target or attack an enemy.

LOFT: This attack represents an indirect, lofting type attack with a ranged weapon such as a bow. A direct line-of-site is not needed if the target is not engaged in combat. In general this type of attack is easier to hit with than shoot but does less damage. Like SHOOT, the damage done is piercing, which causes the highest degree of bleeding wounds.

PARRY: If you enter this command instead of a normal melee command, you will not be able to attack in this round but gain a +6 bonus defending against all attackers.

PUMMEL: This attack type is not currently available.

PUNCH: This Monk command has a greater chance of hitting than CHOP but typically does less damage.

READY: Use this command to ready yourself to receive the charge of an onrushing enemy. Your enemy will get to attack first, gaining a the standard +6 attack bonus for charging, but then you can attack and your opponent suffer the -6 defensive penalty for charging.

Note that if you are being charged by multiple enemies in the same round, if you kill the first one that is charging then you will get an attack on the next one, etc., until you run out of stamina or kill all the enemies.

RECOVER: This attack type is not currently available.

SHOOT: This attack represents a direct line attack with a ranged weapon such as a bow or crossbow. A direct line-of-site is needed or the combat bar for this option will be zero. the damage done is piercing, which causes the highest degree of bleeding wounds.

SLASH: This command represents an attack with a bladed weapon requiring a significant amount of wrist action for its effectiveness. It is less difficult to hit with than THRUST, but does somewhat less damage. The damage caused is slashing, which may cause bleeding or cause the target to become dazed, stunned, or knocked unconscious.

SNUFF: Snuff is an option Assassins have when holding a dagger in the blade-down position. It differs from STAB in that it is more difficult to execute, but has the advantage that the attacker will not be noticed if the attack is successful. It is mainly used when there are multiple enemies and the attacker wishes to pick them off one by one.

STAB: This command is available when one has a dagger in their hand and is holding it blade down via use of the WIELD command. Stab is difficult to hit with but does a considerable amount of damage. It is mainly used by Assassins when hiding and thus getting their backstab bonus.

STAND: This option is like DEFEND, except you regain fatigue as if you were not fighting in combat at all; you are considered defenseless, however, and have a -6 penalty if anyone attacks. This is a good option when you have a very good defensive bar and have a lot of fatigue to recover, or there are no enemies around.

To select the STAND command on the melee combat screen, click on DEFEND a second time.

STEAL: Steal is not actually an attack, but is handled within the melee combat module similarly to an attack. The target must be adjacent for the action to be successful; if it succeeds, the thief gains XP equal to one tenth the value of any coins or gems stolen, as well as the coins or gems themselves.

STRIKE: This command represents an alternate attack action for weapons that do not otherwise have multiple actions. For thrusting weapons, a Strike attack represents an attack that is easier to hit with but does less damage, while for a bashing weapon it represents an attack that is more difficult to hit with but does more damage. The type of damage depends on the type of weapon used.

SWEEP: This attack type is not currently available.

TARGET <enemy>: Use this command to target an enemy, regardless of whether you are currently engaged with that enemy or not, and regardless of what weapon you are using. You will not get to attack in the turn that you target, but on the next turn gain a +6 bonus to your attack (this is reflected in the melee combat graphs). If you target an enemy that you are not currently engaged with, you will start receiving the melee combat graph information for that enemy on the turn after you target.

THROW: This attack type is not currently available.

THRUST: This command represents trying to run the enemy through with the point of your weapon; it is only only available for piercing weapons. It is the most difficult attack to hit with, but in general does the most damage. The damage done is piercing, which typically causes the most bleeding.

WOUND: This attack type is not currently available.
